Telling Time in 2nd Grade to 5 Minutes

Hey, y'all! I hope your students are enjoying math stations as much as mine are! Our next unit is telling time and we are so excited. We work on telling time all year long and throughout the day as we move through our daily routine. It's usually something the kids pick up pretty quick, but we still take a full week of math time to go over it. Our telling time math stations make this unit engaging and hands-on--some of our favorite things!

Personal, printable student clock for learning to tell time in first and second grade

On Monday, we make this handy little clock to help us practice and fill out the first recording page as a whole group. You can pick up a copy of the clock for free here.  It gets our brains ready for the week and the kids LOVE having their own clock to use. Just be sure to print it on something sturdy like card stock so it lasts all week.

Tuesday through Thursday, students visit a series of stations to practice telling time to five minutes. Games, lesson plans, recording sheets and student directions are included. The centers can also be used as whole class lessons if you prefer.

They have write the room options, notebook pages (flaps are so fun!), puzzle cards, play dough mats (or you could use pipe cleaners/chenille stems if you don't trust your group with play dough unattended!), matching games, and more.

We love our math centers because they have student direction cards that help my second graders become more independent. They're written in student-friendly language that most can read by second grade, and they have picture cues for extra support. I throw all their supplies into a plastic shoebox things and they're good to go!

On Friday, students show what they know by playing Telling Time Scoot. They love Scoot because it gets them up and moving. I love playing Scoot because it's a great assessment tool.

We go over the answers when everyone is done. I have my students check their work with a colored pencil so they have the correct answers and I know what their original answers were. (It's my favorite way to "grade" papers!)

You can pick up your own set of telling time stations here. They're also part of a larger year-long math bundle that covers all second grade standards. You can find the big bundle here--it'll save you so much time and $$.

While you're checking those out, be sure to follow me on TPT for all the latest. I'm always doing updates and adding new resources and you won't want to miss a thing.

I hope this helps your math planning a bit. Have a wonderful week and I'll talk to you soon!

Stay cozy,
