Teaching Comparing Numbers in First Grade

Hey, y'all! Are you gearing up for your comparing numbers unit? I love doing this unit during one of those crazy weeks of school because the kids usually catch on quickly even when their schedules are all wacky.

This unit is designed to be used as a centers-based unit, but can be used as whole group activities or for your fast finishers if you have a district curriculum you *have* to use.

We start of the week by introducing math symbols for comparing numbers and do a little guided practice as a whole teach. This is the "I do" and "we do" part of the unit.

Tuesday through Thursday, students go to a series of centers practicing these skills with games and task cards. Students use dice and playing cards to make numbers to compare, play War, and follow directions on task cards to compare the numbers. Directions and recording sheets are included for each station. This is the "we do" and "you do" part of the unit.

On Friday, we play Comparing Numbers Scoot. We check our work together afterwards. That way I can quickly see who needs more support in this area. I love using Scoot games as assessment tools. The think they're just playing but I can quickly find out who's got it and who needs more practice.

For more information about this unit, check it out in my TPT store here. This unit is also part of a larger, year-long math bundle geared just for first grade. You can find the full bundle here. While you're there, be sure to follow me on TPT for all the latest and greatest. I'm always adding new things and you won't want to miss it!

I hope this makes planning your next math unit a little easier. Thanks for stopping by and I'll talk to you soon. Have a wonderful week!

Stay cozy,
