Personal Phonics Sound Wall Interactive Notebook

Hey, y'all! You've heard all about the science of reading. Maybe you've even swapped your word wall for a sound wall. But your district mandated curriculum has your students learning a bunch of random sight words. The dilemma: do you have a word wall and a sound wall up? Do you overload your students with heart words? Maybe shove a list of sight words into their take home folder and tell them practice it at home? Um... no. There is a better way!

In my classroom, we have our sound wall up on display. As we learn new sounds and spelling patterns, we add words with the spelling pattern highlighted to our sound wall. Then, my students add the matching picture image to their phonics notebooks

We glue the sound/mouth position/example picture to the top of the page. Then, we brainstorm some words that have the spelling pattern and write them in our journal. When students are finished writing, we use a highlighter to highlight the spelling pattern, but you could also have students underline or circle it.

Then, students are given a few minutes to illustrate some of the words we wrote. We may even do a directed drawing for some of them.

Each of the images we paste in the notebooks matches the images on our sound wall, which helps students make connections between the two. By having students create their own notebooks, they can add words they use in their writing to their journals on the matching sound spelling pages.

These can be used for whole group instruction to introduce the sounds and spelling patterns, or for small group instruction when analyzing new words. And as I mentioned earlier, these notebooks support students in their writing as they can keep track of their personal words they've added as well.

Combined, all these things help students make sense of phonics rules, letter sounds, and different spelling patterns both in reading and in writing.

You can check out this phonics notebook here, or grab the sound wall and notebook bundle here. The consistency of having everything match is a huge benefit for your students!
