Exploring Equity Through Inquiry-Based Learning

Hey, y'all! One thing we talk about with our students, whether we realize it or not, is equity. We want to make sure our students know they are treated being fairly, even when they don't all get or need the same things. This unit was designed to address equity in education with the idea of students with special needs in mind.

Equity in education defined in inquiry-based learning

Sometimes our students don't understand why someone leaves the room to work on reading or math in different classroom. They don't understand why they shouldn't use the big bathroom stall or why some kids need bouncy bands on the chair and others don't. With discussions on equity, we can help clear this up for our students and help them to advocate for others.

We start off by defining what equity is and what it looks like in schools. We talk about why it's important and how we can support our classmates to make our class and school more equitable. We also talk about what we can do if we find some areas that need improvement.

This is a big conversation for young people but one that students become passionate about. It can be used to discuss other areas of equity besides in the context of our special needs populations, but I would use caution in relating it to racial relations or other emotionally charged situations.
